In an interesting two-minute excerpt of a recent CSPAN interview (available here), Justice Thomas says that "we [i.e., the Court] tend to be very heavily Northeastern in our mentality." He attributes this to the fact that eight of the nine justices are products of Ivy League law schools (Justice Stevens, a Northwestern grad, being the sole exception). This past summer an interesting article on this subject appeared in the New York Times. It's hard to argue with this point in certain respects -- although in fairness, Justice Kennedy, who graduated from Harvard, spent his entire career in California prior to his nomination to the Court.
